CE

As a follower, i would expect my leader to be:

A person who is able to motivate/ inspire others
A person who is easily approachable
A person who thinks for others
A person who knows when to praise and is not afraid to discipline
A person who deserves respect
A person that walks his talk
A person that is Optimistic
A person that cares for his team
A person that has a goal
A person who can give his team purpose
A person who has initiative
A person who is humble enough to accept the opinions of others
A person who knows the time to be formal and the time to be informal
A person who is willing to lead
A person who is willing to sacrifice himself for the team

I think a good leader will manage crisis under stressful situations by first exploring all possible ways of dealing with the matter and then after consulting the team, go ahead with the most direct and appropriate method of dealing with the situation. Not by avoiding the problem or by hiding it, but by meeting it head-on and doing what needs to be done.

Sorry for the extremely late submission, was really busy with tution and IH

  • Responsibility: A leader should be responsible for the team, doing his duty as a leader He has to do his duty such as consistently communicate with the team so that other members will feel committed to do their duties too.
  • Competent: He or she need to be able to "control" the team. "Controlling the team" meaning to check whether they are on task and take effective actions if they are not, etc.
  • Respectful: He or she have to respect his or her team members' rights to voice out their opinions so as to ensure that the team members feel comfortable and committed in doing their duties.
  • Observant: A leader has to take up the role of identifying any surfacing difficulties or problems so that he or she could make the right actions.

What traits do they possess?

I feel a leader has to be honest because if they aren't, then their followers can't trust what they say, their actions and decisions. So basically the followers start to lose trust in the leader. A leader also has to be competent, which means they choose their actions on reason and moral principles and not on emotional desires or feelings. This will lead them to make proper decisions and not regret them. They also have to be forward-looking and set goals and have a vision of the future. They also have to know what they want and how they want to get it. Example, Lee Hsien Loong planned to build 2 Integrated Resorts (IRs) in November 2004. Now, almost 6 years later, his vision is starting to come true. Leaders also fair-minded by not being biased towards a group of people. They also have to be sensitive to the feelings, values, interests, and well-being of others. If not, the followers will not want to work with or follow what the leader tells them to do, thus creating a bad image of the leader.

How do you think a good leader manages crisis under stressful situations?

They should have a strategic vision and peripheral vision: look ahead, look around. Thus they can sense if a crisis will happen by looking for tell-tale signs. They should also have a strong team since success is always derived from the right people and teamwork. They also need to communicate constantly with people through meetings, E-mails, voice mail, Webcasts etc. They also need to have a strong internal compass. They should now what they need to do, but they also have to be flexible.

Sir Winston Churchill

Statesman, historian, and biographer, whose five years of war leadership (1940-45) secured him a central place in modern British history, Churchill is widely considered the greatest political figure in 20th-century Britain. The conviction that Churchill was among the most important men in modern history remains unchanged.

He had 5 key traits of a great leader:

  1. He had a vision.
  2. He had passion.
  3. He was a great decision maker.
  4. He was a team-builder.
  5. He had character.

These traits are shown through some quotations from him.

Passion: "We shall not flag nor fail. We shall go on to the end. . . . We shall fight on the beaches . . . we shall fight in the fields and in the streets . . . we shall never surrender."

He was passionate about fighting the World War 2 for his country.

Team builder: "Healthy citizens are the greatest asset any country can have."

He believed in the importance of citizens willing to serve the country.

Leaders have many different traits, but I personally feel out of all these, these few are vital (At least others should see them as such). They are:
  • The ability to influence others
  • Mental fortitude
  • Integrity
  • Decisive
  • Charisma
  • Vision
  • Perseverance
Under pressure, "heroes" are born. In harsh times or when faced with a challenge, people change, so sometimes, leaders can awaken. However, some leaders who don't face challenges regularly may find themselves stumped or clueless when faced with an actual challenge. When they are, they should keep a cool head, continue making decisions wisely and have the mental fortitude to carry on leading others.

Background of American President - George W. Bush (2001-2009)

President George W. Bush was the son of former president George H.W.
Bush. He was standing firm with the beliefs of freedom, opportunity and
security. He strategized against the terrorist attack on September 11,
2001, when the terrorists killed nearly 3000 people in America.

What makes him a good leader?

Dedication - Protected Americans in 2001
Ethical Leadership - Leading for a good cause

How do you think a good leader manages crisis under stressful situations?

It is important to stay calm in a stressful situation. In President
Bush's example, he strategized in response to the terrorists, to protect
American people.

Another thing about stressful situations is to keep focused and
level-headed. There is no problem that can't be solved. There are only
problems that were never solved in the past.

Leadership traits : Martin Luther King Jr had many leadership traits one of them was courage, the courage to risk their lives for their own principles or what they believe in, this can be seen from him challenging the authority. Mahatma Gandhi also possesses the same trait, even tough he did not have Martin Luther KIng Jr's incredible speech making skills he was still a leader because he was brave enough to challenge the system by sticking to what he believes in.

How do you think a good leader manages crisis under stressful situations? : Good leaders step up to the challenge and take responsibility no matter what happens with a calm and peaceful mind. They are calm so that they can think things through and come up with a solution and lead everyone in the right direction. A good leader also will listen to everyone else's opinion when they are out of ideas in the stressful situation.

Lee Kuan Yew

Lee Kuan Yew started an opposition part called the People's Action Party. He became the first Prime Minister of Singapore when PAP won the most seats in the legislative assembly. However, although he faced many setbacks and failures, he did not give up his vision for Singapore and even turned Singapore from a third world country into a first world metropolitan city.

Lee Kuan Yew was not afraid to be blunt about certain truths and he often gets on people's nerves for doing so. A tenacious guy, he does not give up readily and he will be determined to fulfill his vision. Lee Kuan Yew was a humble man and he did not become proud whenever he achieved something great.

I think a good leader manages crisis under stressful situations by keeping calm and analyze and think before executing any decisions. This is due to the fact that if they make one wrong move, it would become a serious problems. They would seek advice from one another too.

eLearning CE: Activity 3 - Tshin Qi Ren (19)

The few qualities that leader must have are as follow:
- Integrity

- Dedication
- Magnanimity
- Humility
- Openness
- Creativity
- Fairness
- Assertiveness
- A sense of humor

- A good leader would have already set the group's task and its goal.
- Being funny especially when times are tough to help ease the stress the other colleagues have. -When something goes wrong, he/she would blame themselves instead of others.
- He/she should also have trustworthy friends where he could share his "pain" his stress with them.
- Having someone to talk to when you are stressed is a very great way to reduce the stress and help make oneself feel better.
- However, he should keep his cool and make others still feel confident.

Conclusion:  Being all these are hard work. The least one could be is someone who is responsible and understanding and also great at solving problems

Adolf Hitler

Hitler was evil. Yet he managed to convince vast majority of Germans to follow him. He could speak very well and was also very charismatic. He was able to inspire his followers to follow him till the end even when it was obvious that their cause was lost.
He was confident, inspiring and a good speaker

A good leader manages crisis by keeping calm and plan their steps carefully, so as to prevent mistakes and leading his people the wrong way. He could also get help from other people, such as his subordinates or family members. At the same time, he could just relax for a moment and carry out his favorite pastime such as sports or watching a movie. Getting information from the internet or reference books may help solve the crisis he is in too

Traits that leaders posses

Team Oriented: A good leader is like a 'father' in the group of people that he is leading. He takes care of the group. He will ensure that the group members would feel like they belong in the group. For example, he would tell other that 'we' did the work instead of saying 'I' did the work because it is a group effort.
Take responsibility and ownership: A successful leader would not only take ownership of his own work but also for the work of his group members.
Communication skills: A good leader has to be able to tell his group members what he or she wants and expects from his group.

How do you think a good leader manages crisis under stressful situations?

I think a good leader manages crisis under a stressful situation by keeping calm at all times. He or she would be able to think through what to do, weighing out the pros and cons of each solution. He or she could also ask his fellow group members for help and opinion if he is unable to make a decision.

- Dedication: spending whatever time or energy is necessary to accomplish the task at hand
- Humility: recognize that they are no better or worse than other members of the team
- Openness: able to listen to new ideas

  • How do you think a good leader manages crisis under stressful situations?

A good leader will have to keep their cool and think through the possibilities. They will have to inform their followers of the situation and seek their opinion. He will then draw a conclusion and act upon it. In the process, he has to keep alive their spirit. This can be done by humoring his followers to make the atmosphere less tense.

They think about their decisions and stay positive, trying to come up with an appropriate solution to the problem or crisis. They might be straightforward in solving the problem, and not try to solve it in complicated ways. A good leader may also seek help from his/her fellow team members, as people will need help at some point and cannot accomplish everything using only his/her strengths.

italian politician who led the the National Fascist party.
He had a very powerful voice and thought going to war was good for his country, also he was very flexible as much as he was treacherous, swapping sides whenever the situation was bleak, which, although gave him a bad name, helped his country survive.
A good leader would have made a decision and goal at the beginning and would have strived for it, but he was not exactly did so and swapped sides every time, although this was a act of treachery, if you look at it from  certain point of view, it is actually thinking for the nation.
